The St. Michael Prayer in Latin and English

June 23, 2023

St Michael Prayer In Latin

Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio, contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, princeps militiae caelestis, in virtute Dei, in infernum detrude satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo. Amen.

Saint Michael Prayer in English

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Learning Latin Prayers

For me, it's much easier to learn a prayer in Latin when I can match up the Latin word or phrase with the English. This is why I always work on learning a new prayer using a side by side or line by line translation like the one below.

While it's possible to guess the English meaning of some of the Latin when reading the prayers side by side, other lines and phrases can be confusing. If you use Chrome, you can translate the Latin by highlighting a given word or phrase with the Google Translate add-on (here). If you don't use Chrome just google Google Translate and copy and paste.

Side By Side / Line By Line Version (Latin and English)

Sancte Michael Archangele,
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defende nos in proelio,
defend us in battle,
contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
tuque, princeps militiae caelestis,
and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host,
Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute,
by the power of God, cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the earth,
in infernum detrude. Amen. seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Why Pray in Latin?

And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.  This title therefore many of the Jews did read: because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin. - John 19:19,20 (Douay Rheims Bible)

It commonly said that the devil hates Latin and, in my own experience with prayer, this is absolutely true. Latin (along with Greek and Hebrew) is a sacred language by virtue of its use upon the cross. It is also the language of the Mass.

The angels love the Mass. For me, attending the traditional Latin Mass with an awareness of the presence of the angels is beyond beautiful. When I drop to my knees for the Sanctus, I can almost feel them hovering, gentle and pure, all around us.

At every Holy Mass, heaven is opened for us and we join in the praise and adoration of the Angels who stand night and day before the Throne of God singing unceasingly, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty..." Through the perfection of their praise, the Holy Angels can lead us more deeply into this praise of God and loving communion with Him and His divine Son in the Sacred Liturgy. - The Holy Mass as Communio (Opus Angelorum Circular: Advent 2021)

Holy Communion by Angelo Graf von Courten, 1848-1925.

Real EVP & Why Paranormal Investigation is Dangerous (Podcast EP 18)

June 14, 2023

In this episode of my podcast, I share my thoughts on paranormal investigation and a short but very clear EVP.  While I know that a lot of people investigate the paranormal with the best of intentions, in my experience paranormal investigation was a gateway to the occult.

For more on paranormal investigation and phenomena, please check out my paranormal page.  To follow my podcast, just look for New Age To Catholic on your favorite podcast app or visit my podcast page at NewAgeToCatholic.org.

Angels and Unseen Forces

June 7, 2023

I left the New Age and occult in late 2017 and returned to my Catholic faith in early 2020. Much of what happened prior to that was dark. But the funny thing was - I didn't recognize it.

For me, the New Age was all light and color and feel-good energy. And every time I started to think otherwise, a bright and sparkly new course of study would drop into my lap. This, I told myself, was a sign that I was being guided by unseen forces. Which, of course, I was.

But those forces were not of God. Or His angels.

The Discernment of Spirits

Shortly after my return to the Faith, I discovered "The Rules of St. Ignatius For the Discernment of Spirits." The Rules gave me a tool I could use to understand spiritual influence and where it was coming from.

The Rules are a set of 16th century instructions meant to help us decide if a given experience is from our guardian angel (good spirit) or from the enemy (evil spirit). The first thing I noticed about The Rules was that rule number one was the exact opposite of what the New Age and occult taught.

Almost all New Age and occult teachers tells their students to trust their intuition. But all this really meant was that we were supposed to rely on our emotions. If a spiritual experience felt positive we were told to "trust our intuition" and accept it.

I did this for seven solid years but, while I had some success in business, my life as a whole did not get better. In fact, it got worse.

St. Ignatius helped me understand why that happened.

First Rule. The first Rule: In the persons who go from mortal sin to mortal sin, the enemy is commonly used to propose to them apparent pleasures, making them imagine sensual delights and pleasures in order to hold them more and make them grow in their vices and sins. In these persons the good spirit uses the opposite method, pricking them and biting their consciences through the process of reason. - St. Ignatius, The Rules for Discernment of Spirits

The sins in my life when I was involved in the occult might not sound all that bad. But if you look at sin as moving away from (rather than towards God), my New Age and occult practices definitely qualified. And the pattern was just as St. Ignatius described.

While I was happy skating from one occult experience to the next, at some point I would always began to feel that whatever it was I was doing wasn't quite right. This I think was my guardian angel giving me poking at my conscience. But before I could figure out exactly what was troubling me, a new spiritual experience would lead me on to some other New Age practice.

That, I believe was the bad angel (or enemy) leading me from sin to sin. Content but deluded.

The Angel God Promises

He said, “Fear not, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then Eli′sha prayed, and said, “O Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire... - 2 Kings 6:16-17 (Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition)

While a lot of what the New Age has to say about angels is inaccurate, it is right in this: We do have angels to guide us. Each individual, in fact, has a dedicated guardian angel. This is a truth of the Catholic faith that can be found in both the Bible and the catechism.

According saints like St. Ignatious and St. Thomas Aquinas, our guardian angel communicates with us through our conscience and our imagination. He may inspire us and give us new ideas. Or help us think twice when something is taking us in the wrong direction.

Very occasionally, our holy guardian angel might even speak aloud. This happened to me just before my oldest son's accident and has happened to lots of other people in similar circumstances. But it is something that only happens on occasion.

To see our angel is even rarer and, to me, that makes sense.

I have never seen my guardian angel. But I've had dreams and visions about evil spirits, and even though those experiences were deceptive, they made an impressive. Enough of an impression to make me think that if one of God's angels showed themselves to us, it would be very hard to process.

Which is why, in my opinion, having a vision of God's holy angels is something that is usually reserved for the saints.

Unlike the fallen angels, God's angels aren't quick to provide people with sensory / spiritual experience. But they are with us and they are a source of help and comfort to us all.

There is a LOT more to say about the holy guardian angels. I'll be writing more about the angels as I move forward with my studies. So please check back!
